This interview was conducted at the James B. Hunt Jr. Library of North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, North Carolina. In the interview Dr. Zia discusses: his family and experiences as a student in China; Communist occupation of Shanghai shortly before his departure to the United States; working his first job building a college campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; work in industry and consulting with an agency that introduced the use of pre-stressed concrete in the US; teaching and research as a graduate student; his experiences in teaching and research at NC State; his time as head of the department; Ralph Fadum; teaching at the University of California at Berkeley, 1964-1965; the development of Centennial Campus; and changes in the College of Engineering and the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering.
