Title:
Thunderstorm Project -- Information about Ice
Description:
Fig. 16 Thin section through center of snow pellet under polarized light. Pellet is surrounded by a plastic film and held by ordinary ice to the glass slide. Arrow points to pellet. Notice large single crystal with few air hollows in the form of bubbles. Fig. 17 Polarized light, shows that this pellet consisted of a few large crystals similar to the spongy ice structure of small hail stones. Its origin is thought to be a large drop frozen at a relatively warm temperature. Fig. 18 Thin section showing a pellet made up of small, rimed cloud droplets. Its origin was probably through the accretion of cloud drops on an ice crystal which is not detectable on the photograph.
