Title:
R. D. Wood fire hydrant
Description:
This fire hydrant is located in front of Leazar Hall and is apparently not dated, but the many coats of paint it has received over the years make it virtually impossible to read whatever words were cast into the hydrant when it was manufactured. This hydrant is identified by its size, shape, and features as a R. D. Wood "Improved" model, with two-tier bonnet, short bonnet dome, and a one-piece barrel. It was manufactured in Philadelphia probably before 1939, when R. D. Wood hydrants with two-piece barrels went into production. The two-tier bonnet was inspired by the design of the US Capitol dome.
