Historical note:
This cemetery was the first designated burying ground in Raleigh, and was authorized as such in 1798. The cemetery is listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places.
Provenance note:
The cemetery consisted of four acres, originally, divided into one-acre quadrants. It was later enlarged to include a total of over seven acres. The iron fence surrounding the cemetery was added later, and was recycled from capitol square.
