- Historical note:
- This cemetery was the first designated burying ground in Raleigh, and was authorized as such in 1798. The cemetery is listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Provenance note:
- The cemetery consisted of four acres, originally, divided into one-acre quadrants. It was later enlarged to include a total of over seven acres. The iron fence surrounding the cemetery was added later, and was recycled from capitol square.
