Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Architectural note:
The machine shop, roundhouse, and offices were constructed in 1896. The Back Shop was added in 1904 to 1905 and in 1924 a second roundhouse was constructed. The 1896 machine shop was demolished in 1960.
Historical note:
The shops were named for company official Samuel Spencer. In the railroad heyday, Spencer was the largest heavy repair facility in the Southern system. The collective shops are listed as a site on the National Register of Historic Places.
