Building: Elliott, William Barn and Stable (Chowan County, North Carolina)

Built:
Community:
Chowan County
State:
North Carolina
Provenance note:
William Elliott (planter, mill owner, and builder), first owner.
Architectural note:
Elliott oriented his barn and stable in opposite directions, at a right angle. The stable utilized a tranverse crib plan with the stalls flanking the runway, while the barn featured a main runway that was parallel to the roof ridge. Both buildings employed an innovative system of adjustable partitions that allowed for flexible storage and ventilation.
