The store was built for Henry Clay Brittain, a general goods merchant and store owner, first owner.
Historical note:
The building is the architectural companion to the store across the intersection, which was owned by Brittain's cousin Noah Webster Brittain. The structure falls within the boundaries of the Summerfield Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Architectural note:
Considered the county's finest surviving commercial building of its era, the structure features particularly elaborate brick details.
