Provenance note:: Joseph Lane (brother of Joel Lane, farmer, justice of the peace, and county commissioner), first owner. Joseph Gales (founder of the Raleigh Register newspaper), second owner, renamed the house West Hill. Phares Yates, third owner, left the house to his daughter and her husband, Eugenia and Joseph Bennet, fourth owners.
Architectural note:: The home provides an example of the fine one-room plan houses that were typically constructed in the eighteenth century. The building's wainscoting was removed during a period of inoccupancy. The house is one of the few surviving small colonial houses in the area. The north room was added in 1800.
Historical note:: The structure was rescued, moved, and restored in 1980, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
