- Provenance note:
- The house originally belonged to Elijah Atkinson, a wealthy planter. Later, William A. Smith acquired the property when he married Atkinson's widow. Smith was a Unionist, served as a U.S. congressman, and was president of the N.C. Railroad and the Western N.C. Railroad.

- The two-story house features both Greek Revival and Italianate details and has a broad central hall plan.
