Building: Jacocks, Jonathan Hill, Gen. House -- Pleasant Valley Farm (New Hope Township, Perquimans County, North Carolina)

Built:
Street:
2796 New Hope Rd
Community:
New Hope Township
State:
North Carolina
Zip:
27944
Provenance note:
The property initially belonged to Joshua Whedbee, first owner. General Jonathan Hill Jacocks (legislator and civic leader), second owner, bought the estate in 1838. After his death in 1847, the property passed to his widow, Grizzell Jacocks, third owner, who later married Dr. Robert C. Jenkins. Jenkins sold the house to C. W. Grandy Jr., fourth owner, in 1878. It remained in the Grandy family until 1917, when L.C. Rolfe (county commissioner and postmaster) resided there and called the property "Pleasant Valley Farm." The house has passed though a number of owners since.
Architectural note:
The house is unusually large at six bays and two stories, with a four bay, two story rear ell. Each chimney has a different construction form. The house includes interior and exterior chimneys with single and double paved shoulders. The different parts of the house suggest several building phases.
Historical note:
The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
