- The complex acted as both a home and school for William J. Bingham, first owner, and his sons.
- Architectural note:
- The initial house existing when Bingham bought the property is now the rear ell of the current house. Outbuildings from the nineteenth century still exist on the site.
- Historical note:
- The Binghams operated several schools in North Carolina. The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
