Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. The house was built for David Alexander Barnes, a member of state House of Commons and superior court judge.
Architectural note:
Jacob W. Holt functioned as the builder of this home. This house's construction is typical of contractor Holt's style: a center-passage plan, with four rooms per floor. However he adopted decorative features from "Bicknell's Village Builder" so that customers could get "the best and most modern styles." The property is one of Jacob W. Holt's last and most lavishly decorated.
