Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Provenance note:
The house was probably built for John Branch.
Architectural note:
The large, two-story frame plantation house was probably built before 1806. It has a center-passage plan, two rooms deep, and is complete with four chimneys done in Flemish-bond brickwork.
Historical note:
The building was likely built before 1806. Tradition holds that John Branch's son, Joseph, played host to the Marquis de Lafayette here during his 1825 American tour. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
