- The mill was founded by John F. Love, George Gray and others and given a name from the combination of the names Love and Gray.
- Architectural note:
- The main portion of the mill rises six stories, with an eight-story tower.
- Historical note:
- After the mill's 1921 expansion, it was noted to be the largest textile mill in the South under a single roof. Loray Cotton Mill played a major role in Southern labor history when the National Textile Workers Union strike in 1929 turned violent. The Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
