Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Provenance note:
The mill was founded by John F. Love, George Gray and others and given a name from the combination of the names Love and Gray.
Architectural note:
The main portion of the mill rises six stories, with an eight-story tower.
Historical note:
After the mill's 1921 expansion, it was noted to be the largest textile mill in the South under a single roof. Loray Cotton Mill played a major role in Southern labor history when the National Textile Workers Union strike in 1929 turned violent. The Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
