The church was built for a congregation led by Rev. Edian D. Markham.
Architectural note:
The asymmetrical building combines Romanesque and Greek Revival elements, with a soaring tower in front.
Historical note:
St. Joseph's served as a center for the civil rights movement and now serves as a community arts and heritage center. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
