Provenance: Designed by architect William Percival. | Architectural Note: This example of the Italianate style stands in contrast with the region's other more staid courthouses. The design is complete with a domed cupola, arched central pavilions, and pilasters frame arched windows along the upper story. | Historical Note: Percival's design took first prize for architectural drawings at the 1858 North Carolina State Fair. The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historical note:
Percival's design won first prize at the 1858 state fair in the category of architectural drawing. The courthouse featured an alternate style from the multitude of Greek Revival courthouses being erected in the state around this time. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
