Architectural note:
Designed by architect William Percival. This example of the Italianate style stands in contrast with the multitude of more staid Greek Revival courthouses being erected in the region around this time. The design is complete with a domed cupola, arched central pavilions, and pilasters frame arched windows along the upper story. The courtroom boasts an arched judges' niche, cast-iron railings, and a molded plaster ceiling.
Historical note:
Percival's design took first prize at the 1858 North Carolina State Fair in the category of architectural drawing. The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
