Historical note:
The Benthall-Jenkins House, located near Menola in Hertford County, is a typical rural house of the early nineteenth century. It was probably built by the father of Lawrence Benthall around 1830, and is the birthplace of Jesse Thomas Benthall, co-inventor (with F.F. Furguson) of a peanut picker in 1905 and sole inventor of a peanut stemmer in 1908. Peanuts play an important role in Hertford County's economy today. The land around the house was in the Benthall family since the charter from the king of England. A Yankee raid in which valuable records of Hertford County were burned makes precise dating of this house's construction impossible.
