Provenance note:: George Washington Capehart (planter), first owner. George Capeheart's father, Cullen Capeheart, bought the house in 1811. The house remained in the family until the late twentieth century.
Historical note:: Scotch Hall was the largest antebellum plantation in Bertie County. The plantation was the setting of the 1851 novel "Bertie" by George Throop, who had been a tutor of the Capehart children. The plantation produced corn, cotton, livestock, beans, and fish. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Architectural note:: The two-story frame house includes a center passage plan, a small pedimented porch, and a full-width shed porch.
