Built:
Community:
Smith Island
State:
North Carolina
Provenance note:
United States Lifesaving Service, first owner
Historical note:
The station was constructed due to sea encroachment on the original Cape Fear Lifesaving Station, which was built in 1882. Located slightly down the beach, the newer station served Bald Head Island until 1937, when it became inactive due to construction of a new station on Oak Island. The site was briefly used by the Coast Guard Horse Patrol to protect the coast during World War II.
