Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Asa Thomas (gristmill owner), first owner; Romulus Saunders (congressman and minister to Spain), early nineteenth century owner; John T. Garland (physician), early nineteenth century owner
Architectural note:
The home contains the finest Adamesque interiors in Caswell County, which were installed around 1820. The house features an interior double door with an elliptical fanlight, a detail rare in the state. The exterior has been remodeled, but the interior remains intact.
Historical note:
Saunders purchased Longwood after leaving Fairview, but permanently traded homes with Garland in 1824 so that he could entertain presidential candidate William H. Crawford.
