Building: Powell, Dempsey and Polly House, Old (Wake County, North Carolina)

Built:
Community:
Wake County
State:
North Carolina
Provenance note:
Dempsey and Polly Powell, first owners; Hunter family, mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century owner.
Historical note:
The house was built by the Dempsey Powell family in the latter part of the eighteenth century and used as a residence by that family until 1815 when it was replaced by a larger house built approximately 100 feet to the west of the old house. At some later date it was acquired by the Garner family and at one time in history was known as the "Hunter Lodge." It was later purchased by James Byrnes, then acting director of the North Carolina Museum of Art. He restored the big house built in 1815 and made his residence there. Mr. Byrnes made plans to restore the small, older house and use it as a guest cottage, but was forced to sell the entire farm when he accepted a new position with a midwest art museum. Later owner, Mr. Randy Harrell bough the farm from Mr. Byrnes and mad plans to restore both houses and all out-buildings to original for use as his residence. This house is believed to be one of the oldest houses standing and intact in Wake County, North Carolina.
Architectural note:
The building was constructed around the late eighteenth century. The older home lies on a property with the newer, Federal style main house and several nineteenth century outbuildings including a smokehouse, a wellhouse, a kitchen, and a barn.
