Provenance note:: Richmond Temperance and Literary Society established in 1855
Architectural note:: The unique hexagonal brick building features a wooden finial on the roof, consisting of an overturned wine glass on a Bible. It was restored in 1959 as accurately as possible after many years of neglect and decay.
Historical note:: Located in a section of present Scotland County, North Carolina settled about 1773, the Richmond Literary and Temperance Society Hall was built in 1855 and served as a meeting place for debates and literary discussions as well as a community library. The ceiling was once painted blue with a red star representing each member, which was painted black if the temperance vow was broken and white when the member died. The hall was restored in 1959 as accurately as possible after many years of neglect and decay. Probably the only building in North Carolina built to house a temperance society, the Temperance Society Hall remains a symbol of the moral and cultural attitudes of a begone society. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
