The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Architectural note:
The one hundred feet deep well was constructed of locally made brick, and was designed and built by F. D. Giddens in 1867.
Historical note:
Mr. F.D Giddens came to Goldsboro in 1859. He had the will dug in the same year. It was 100 feet deep and bricked in with brick from Waynesboro, which was the original site of Goldsboro. Mr. Giddens designed and built the well house in 1867. Later it became a favorite stopping place for passengers who were traveling by stagecoach along the Old Coach Road that ran from Raleigh to New Bern, N.C.
