In 1967 Huffman was one of the best shortstops in the ACC with a .274 batting average. He switched to second base where his quick hands and strong arm made him a good man on double plays. In 1968, as part of the World Series team, Huffman had twelve stolen bases and hit a crucial three-run homer against UNC to secure a win and keep NC State in the ACC race.
