Whil James Piavis

In spring 2005 The Pirate Captain made waves on NC State's campus. Campaigning for the presidency with a platform that focused on expanding the "cargo line," "[listening] to ye qualms," "[fostering] our ways," and "[creating] a crew of 5 colleges in Raleigh" to lobby city council. The Pirate Captain was unlike any Student Government presidential candidate ever seen before, perhaps on any campus. Wearing an eye patch and a parrot on his shoulder, many Student Government representatives did not consider the Pirate Captain a serious candidate; students, however, embraced the Captain and elected him to the presidency in April 2005. During his presidential victory speech, the Captain revealed himself to be mechanical engineering student Whil Piavis.

Accomplishments

Piavis created a program to encourage students to study hard and perform well in the classroom. Piavis awarded “A” students with buttons; the award buttons displayed Piavis’s campaign symbol and stated, “It’s a pirate’s life for me.” Although Student Government voted not to fund the buttons, Piavis located a private donor.

Piavis participated in a Student Government initiative to make students aware of the Raleigh Nuisance Party Ordinance and the effects of excessive alcohol consumption. SG representatives, including Piavis, distributed door hangers with information and contact numbers for Student Health Services and Campus Police.

Currently

Whil Piavis is currently studying mechanical engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
