Robert Gunn was the thirty-fifth North Carolina State University Student Government vice president. Additionally, he served as vice president for the 1956 State Student Legislature planning committee and vice president of student-government affairs of the Carolinas-Virginia Region of the National Student Association. He was also active in the Student Council of the Consolidated University of North Carolina.

During Gunn’s tenure, the student legislature passed a resolution stating that students should not wear athletic shorts or sweat clothes in the cafeteria. While not enforced, legislators hoped students would voluntarily uphold the resolution like “gentlemen.”
