Gardner, Oliver Max, 1882-1947

Biographical Note:
O. Max Gardner earned a B.S. degree in chemistry from State College in 1903 and joined the staff as a chemistry instructor. He was Democratic Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina from 1917 to 1921, and Governor of North Carolina from 1929 to 1933. Gardner led the movement for the consolidation of State College, the Woman's College at Greensboro and the University at Chapel Hill into the Greater University at North Carolina. Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC is named for Gardner and his wife, Fay Webb Gardner.
