Provenance note:
Edward C. Knight, Jr., businessman, and Amanda Marie Louise LeBel Knight, built the lodge and were the first owners.
Architectural note:
The Whalehead Club exhibits features of both the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau detail. The property also includes a bridge and boathouse. Local tradition attributes the building design to the Knights.
Historical note:
Local tradition holds that the Knights built the Whalehead Club after Amanda Knight, a sportswoman, was excluded from local all-male hunting clubs. The structure is considered the grandest shooting club in Currituck County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
